Conference Details

The 2008 Minnesota State Planning Conference will be held September 22nd to September 24th in Duluth. The conference has grown. Only four years ago it was out of the ordinary to have over 150 attendees. In 2007, over 300 planners state-wide attended the conference. Because of the growth, the 2008 conference is being held Monday (22nd) to Wednesday (24th) at the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center and the Downtown Waterfront Holiday Inn.

The conference will include continuing education opportunities on each of the three days. The conference title, "Transitions in Planning," reflects the changing nature of planning issues: every day, planners are confronting dynamic policy issues such as housing, the environment, and transportation. The major focus areas for the educational programs at this year's conference are:

  • Regional and Metropolitan Area Planning
  • Rural and Small Town Planning
  • Partnerships
  • Environmental Planning
  • Professional Development

The 2008 conference will kick-off at the DECC on Monday, September 22nd. After a short lunch and educational sessions in the afternoon, a harbor tour on the Vista Star will provide an overview of the issues faced in a major international seaport.

On Tuesday attendees will be treated to breakfast followed by several hours of programs. At lunch, a panel will speak about food issues in planning, relating the the APA's new policy initiative on food policy Following lunch attendees can choose to continue attending programs at the DECC, or they can choose from a variety of mobile tours and events. Events will include hiking on the Superior Hiking Trail, biking on the Munger Trail, and golfing at Enger Tower. Mobile tours will include a design charrette of downtown Duluth, an educational tour of the company town at Morgan Park, or an educational tour of Duluth's Skyline Parkway. In the evening, dinner will be followed by a keynote speaker and events put together by the conference's events committee.

The conference winds down on Wednesday with breakfast, educational sessions, and an informal lunch. On Wednesday, the conference moves to the Holiday Inn's meeting rooms.

The 2008 MnAPA conference plans to offer an opportunity for attendees to obtain Certificate Maintenance credits for their American Institute of Certified Planners membership. Though the program has not yet been set, it is intended that attendees will be able to obtain up to 16 CM credits over the course of the conference. More information on CM credits can be found at the APA website.

Without the hard work of volunteers, sponsors, the MnAPA Board and the MnAPA administrators, the 2008 conference would not be possible. In particular, the conference committee would like to thank Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Minnesota. Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Minnesota has been instrumental in creating Design for Health, a collaboration attempting to bring together emerging research with principles of community design and healthy living.
